Symantec is reporting that the infamous Downadup worm has hit China, Argentina, Taiwan, Brazil, India, Chile, and Russia but not The US. It has been determined that the area's hit hardest are the area's which have the highest rate of pirated software.
Pirated copies of Windows are unable to make all the updates and hence those systems are left wide open to the devastating effects of the worm. In most cases the users of pirated copies of Window turn off automatic updates to avoid detection of the stolen software.
Updating on a regular basis, using antivirus software and NOT using stolen copies of Windows will offer the most adequate proteciton as this worm makes its way in through a vunerability which Microsoft patched back in October. The peer-to-peer communities are now being hit so staying away from them for pirated copies of software is also advisable.
